PROJECT NARP, ATi~-E

There are three main objectives to the development of this proposal:
Create partnerships between agencies, civic volunteers, community school, municipalities
2. Educate through tours and "hands-on" learning, professional demonstrations
3. Develop a weekly series of integrated cable television supportive programming

The final outcome will be a directory listing available resources that include: 1) type of service they
provide, 2) grant funding opportunities and programs, 3) address and location, 4) examples of projects
and/or programs for review by private residents, municipalities, and businesses. This directory will also
function as a collaborative self guided tour menu to sites illustrative of impacts and remedies.

This project will develop partnerships that will deliver technical and environmental education that is
based on holistic ecosystem management and comprehensive environmental planning for homeowners,
elected officials, planners, and businesses in the expanding urban fringe. Partnerships will include
agencies, civic organizations, and businesses who specialize in areas of forest management, water
quality, prairie restoration, organic recycling, and wildlife management. These partners wilt come
together to pool their resources for community education through guided theme tours and "hands-on"
Ica_ming opportunities. Tour sites include City of Kamsey Environmental Festival, MN/DOT roadside
partnerships in Big Lake, Elk River, and Ramsey, new business landscaping, Mississippi West Anoka
County Park Arboretum in development, park, trail & new housing development and older
neighborhoods, oak wilt, wind breaks, riparian buffers, Oliver Kelly Farm, Becket Plant Eval/~ation &
Demonstration site, Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge, and others that show examples of problems,
issues, and solutions. The half day tours till be scheduled during the months of ApriI through September.
The tours wilt be directed by professional personnel from agency and organizational partnersand will
include supplemental handouts and resources. Tours can be attended by families, civic groups,
individuals, and interested professionals. Sites will be finalized in collaboration with partners after grant
is approved.

In addition to the tours and site demonstrations, the partnership will develop weekly cable programming
from existing resources and materials that will provide additional technical and timely information for
viewers through their local cable network. It will solicit and advertise the tour opportunities while
providing additional ecosystem and landscape technical and educational information for the viewer. The
weekly environmental program will also be a calendar for community events, edi~cafion classes, and will
highlight partner specialization's.

By offering a representative array of topics and technical support (speakers), the project can attempt to
involve and/or target audiences with different interests and concerns. In addition, by providing the
technical information on current issues involving the fragmentation, management, enhancement, and
understanding of the natural resources, the general public can see and learn first-hand some of the
environmental issues impacting the ecosystem. In an area known for its fast growth and rapid
development, many homeowners are new to the area, are not familiar with its'resources, and are not
current on the opportunities available to them. Thc partnerships this project creates should assist the
general public with technical assistance, but also establish a better awareness between the public and the
"environmental" businesses, planners, organizations, and interest groups in the area.

Ali of the learning opportunities can be attended by families or individuals and will be open to the
public.

I
I
I
I

I
I:
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
