MEMORANDUM

DATE:
TO:

FROM:

SUBJECT:

August 12, 1997

Mayor and Councilmembers
Ryan Schroeder, City Administrator /'Il_
James Gromberg, Economic Development Coordinato

Recycling Activity for the First Half of 1997

Attached for your review and comment are the following reports: a report showing a comparison
of the recycling weights for the materials collected in the curbside program and the January -
June Recycling Tonnage Report for 1997. The first report indicates that the City is achieving a
10 percent increase in the amount of material currently being recycled in the curbside recycling
program. If this trend continues, the City should see an increase of 235,866 pounds of material
by the end of 1997. This increase alone, if all other materials remained constant, would result in
the City achieving its 1997 Anoka County goal.

The tonnage report indicates that the City has collected a total of 594.80 tons of material. The
City's goal for 1997 is 1,383 tons of material, resulting in the City achieving 43 percent of its
goal for the entire year. This may cause some concern as the City would fail to meet its goal by
14 percent if the same level of material was recycled in the final six months of the year.
Traditionally, the City has recycled a majority of its material in the final six months of the year.
This is evidenced by the following data: 1996 - 55% in the final six months, 1995 - 47% ( City
only attained 93% of goal), 1994 - 55% and 1993 - 60%. In addition to this trend, the City, in
1996, recycled 55% of the curbside total in the final six months of the year. This would indicate
that the City could expect to .recycle an additional 700.91 tons resulting in a total of 1,295.71
tons of material. This total does not include the materials received in the drop-off programs such
as the recycling day, Vietnam Vets, and Aid to Southeast Asians which accounted for over 45
tons of additional material. The City also receives an annual r. eport from the Boy Scouts
newspaper drop-off which will account for an average of 60 to 80 tons of material. This should
allow for the City to attain its goal of 1,383 tons in 1997.

As always, if you have any questions concerning the curbside recycling program, please do not
hesitate to contact me.
