CASE # 14 <br />A <br />UPDATE ON TRAFFIC CIRCLE <br />By: Steve Jankowski, City Engineer <br />Background: <br />At the September 9, 1997 Council meeting, the City Council ordered the installation of a <br />temporary traffic circle at the intersection of 149th Avenue and Peridot Street. Attached are <br />' sketches showing the proposed and actual installation. The traffic circle installation was initiated <br />on November 4, and completed on Wednesday, November 5. On Friday and Saturday, <br />November 7 and 8, the installation was vandalized with the island warning signs and concrete <br />' planter being tipped over. <br />' It has also been brought to the City's attention that longer wheel base vehicles, particularly <br />school buses, cannot negotiate some of the necessary movements. Specifically buses cannot <br />make a westbound through movement without going left of the circle, which is not a legal <br />' movement and causes concern by the City Attorney regarding the issue of liability. Also the <br />southbound movement from Peridot to eastbound 149th Avenue can only be made by longer <br />buses by traveling left of the island. <br />' City Council directed that staff review the design of the island to determine whether adjustments <br />might correct these problems. At the time of this writing, I have scheduled an on -site meeting <br />' for Thursday morning with the manager of Hunts Bus Company to investigate such solutions.
