I
I
I
I
I
'1
I
I

I

I
I
I
I

RECOMMEND HIRING NICHOLAS STOLP AS PATROL OFFICER
By: Linda Waite Smith, Administrative Services Manager

Background:

The City has been notified that COPSFAST grants are not subject to the current levy limitations
imposed by the State Legislature. As a result, the Police Department has a new patrol officer
position open' effective January 1, 1998.

In February of 1997, the City advertised for patrol officers and received 179 applications which
were rated and ranked. Twenty applicants were invited to first interviews; six of those went on
to second interviews and were put on a list of people eligible to be hired. Two people on the list
have been hired, one in May and one in August.

Staff Recommendation:

Nicholas Stolp is the next person on the eligible list. We are recommending that he be offered
the position of patrol Officer, effective January 3, 1998, contingent on successful completion of
background checks, physical examination and psychological examination. Mr. Stolp has worked
for the Zumbrota, MN Police Department for almost three years. Before that, he worked for the
Rochester, MN Police Department for four and one-half years. He has an Associate Degree in
Law Enforcement,

The starting salary for this position is $31,723 per union contract.

Committee Action:

Motion to recommend that Council authorize hiring Nicholas Stolp as a Patrol Officer, effective
January 3, 1998, at an annual salary of $31,723 contingent on his successfully passing
background checks, a physical examination and a psychological examination.

Reviewed By:

Acting City Administrator
Police Chief

PC I2/09/97

Copies also distributed to:
