All indications are that Chief
Gustafson has performed satisfactorily during the first six months in his position.

Consensus of the Personnel Committee is as follows: (1) The Police Chief should have a pager
for emergencies. (2) There should be training for the Chief and the Department on handling the
mentally handicapped. (3) The Chief should review the use of volunteers and work with the
snowmobile club. (4) The Chief should be more proactive in the community. (5) There should
be a follow-up witl~ Crime Watch - maybe work with volunteers to watch the parks, etc. (6) The
Chief should be working closely with animal control. (7) The Department will be growing - the
Chief needs to work with it and be a good manager.

Case #2: Approve Revised Job Description for Public Safety Aide

The Personnel Committee reviewed the revised job description for the Public Safety Aide and
suggested that staff check on classes, such as the baby-sitting class, to make sure that we are not
duplicating classes offered by others in the community. It was also stated that vehicle
maintenance, etc. should not be a priority.

Consensus of the Committee was to recommend that City Council approve the revised job
description of the Public Safety Aide and that Council also authorize staff to advertise the
position with the intent of having the person hired to begin work after January 1, 1998.

ADJOURNMENT

Motion by Mayor Gamec and seconded by Councilmember Haas Steffen to adjourn the meeting.

Personnel Committee/November I0, 1997
