CASE #2

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION VISION
By: James D. Gromberg, Economic Development Coordinator

Background:

At our meeting on January 9, 1997, the Commission members present discussed the future
direction of the Economic Development Commission (EDC). This discussion has been brought on
by a series of issues that are currently coming to the forefront of the City. These issues included
the number of vacancies on the commission, the changing in the direction of the City staff, and the
seemingly aimless direction of the Commission as a whole.

During the last year, the EDC has seen the Business Appreciation Day grow to the largest turnout
in its' history and the development of more commercial/industrial space than in any previous time
period. These highs have been tempered by the Business EXPO straggling to maintain the
attendance by local businesses and the difficulty in finding volunteers to work at the Game Fair
Booth.

Using the discussions that occurred at this meeting the following projects should undertaken by the
EDC:

· Limit EDC involvement in the Business Appreciation Day to a review of the materials that
are to be sent out and attendance at the event.

· Change the format of the Business EXPO to be limited to a single booth or two showing
the services provided by the City.

Development of a plan for the future development of the Highway gl0 corridor. This plan
should also include the proposed split of property between commercial/industrial and
residential as indicated by the comprehensive plan update.

Intensification of the business visitation program.
meeting if required due to scheduling conflicts.
opportunities for the City.

This may take the place of the monthly
Continued development of marketing

I have also drafted a memo for the City Council addressing these proposed suggestions that will be
available for discussion at the meeting. This memo will be directed to the City Council in the effort
to provide the necessary dialogue to allow that all parties understand the future direction of the
commission.
