A planning proposal for:
Mississippi West Regional Park

Anoka County Department of Parks and Recreation

I!

SUMMARY

The following report outlines the reasons and strategies for the
inclusion of one new park elements and exclusion of one park element
into/from the Metropolitan Council's Recreation Open Space
Development Guide/Policy Plan:

INCLUSION
1. Mississippi West Regional Park

EXCLUSION
1. Rum River South Regional Park

Anoka County controls 273 acres of park land undeveloped for public park usage along the north
bank of the Mississippi River. Anoka Count, s park land comprises two islands set in the Mississippi River
and adjoining sand plain lands overlooking the Mississippi River. It is an opportunity for the metropolitan
area to have' a regional park and trail set in a prairie / oak savanna landscape along the metropolitan's most
si,_qmificant water resource - the Mississippi River.
The Anoka County Department of Parks and Recreation is proposing to the Metropolitan Council
its/vftssissippi River park land become a part of the regional park system. The proposed regional park
would function as a regional park and be called Mississippi West Regional Park.

The proposed Mississippi West Regional Park adjoins the metropolitan areas most significant
natural resource - the Mississippi River. The Metropolitan Council in its effort to increase protection and
access to the Mississippi River already has the following ex/sting or proposed regional parks along the
Mississippi River - Coon Rapids Dam, Anoka County River front, North Mississippi, Central Mississippi
River front, Mississippi Gorge, Hidden Falls-Crosby Farm, Lilydale-Harriet Island, Battle Creek, Grey
Cloud Island, and Spring Lake. The proposed Mississippi West Regional Park would be a continuation of
past Mississippi River regional park efforts.
