1997-1998 SKATING SEASON
By: Mark Boos, Parks/Utilities Supervisor

CASE #3

Background:

The purpose of this case is to update the Commission on the winter skating season. Warming
houses at Central Park and Ramsey Elementary School are scheduled to open for the season at
3:30 p.m. on December 19, 1997. Our goal has been to have these two primary sites open the
weekend prior to the kid's holiday break period. Usually, there is some skatable ice and the
weather is cold enough to warrant opening. As of this writing, however, daily temperatures are
too warm to begin flooding. As is the case each year, as soon as the temperatures are
consistently below freezing, staff begins flooding around the clock. This season, as in the past,
skating will be available at the following locations:

Central Park
One pleasure rink with a one-quarter mile skating path
Two, 200-foot hockey rinks

Ramsey Elementary School
One pleasure rink
Two, 200-foot hockey rinks

Rivers Bend
One pleasure rink

Woodland Green
One pleasure rink

Riverwo0d Hills
One pleasure rink

Rabbit Park
One pleasure rink

Each year, the City receives requests for ice at locations in addition to these. However, the above
are an even distribution throughout the City, and about the maximum we can accommodate given
the single water truck and our other duties. It should also be noted that the last four rinks receive
minimal maintenance, usually not receiving snow removal until the second or third work day
after a snow fall with sweeping and flooding occuring the next business day. Central Park and
Ramsey Elementary School facilities are generally skatable within a few hours following street
plowing, with sweeping and flooding occuring the next day.
