Background:

CASt, #:

PUBLIC WORKS MAINTENANCE WORKER APPOINTMENT
By: Linda Waite Smith, Administrative Services Manager

On January 9, 1996, the City Council authorized us to advertise the Public Works Maintenance
Worker position added in the 1996 budget. The position will work about 60% of the time in
Parks. The remaining 40% of the time will be allocated to Streets for snowplowing and to
Utilities. The starting salary range was advertised as $8.99 to $11.00 per hour.

We received 90 applications which were reviewed, rated and ranked. We invited the ten top-
ranked applicants to a first interview on February 23. An interview panel rated each applicant's
responses and invited the four top-ranked candidates to a second interview on March 1.

The finalist in this process was Mr. Duane Dordahl. He is a graduate of Staples (MN)
Vocational Technical College and Wadena (MN) Technical College. He holds a Class A
Commercial Driver's License and is experienced in machine operation and maintenance as well
as irrigation technology and water well drilling.

Staff Recommendation:

We are recommonding that Mr. Duane Dordahl be offered the position of Public Works
Maintenance Worker at a starting salary of $10.00 per hour, contingent on successful completion
of a pre-employment physical examination that includes drug and alcohol tests as required by
City policy and Federal regulations. We are recommending a starting salary above the minimum
based on Mr. Dordahl's twenty years of related experience and his technical education related to
irrigation and wells. His estimated start date would be April 1, 1996.

Committee Action:

Motion to recommend that Council authorize hiring of Duane Dordahl as a Public Works
Maintenance Worker at a starting salary orS10.00 per hour.

Reviewed By:

City Administrator

PC 03/12/96

Copies also distributed to:

Parks/Utilities Supervisor
Public Works Supervisor
