As the reports show, the City issued 22 new home permits which compares to the 18 projected during this period in the residential activity forecast. This brings the total single family home permits to 56 for the year. This rata of construction puts the City on a path to construct a total of 205 new homes in 1996, which wilt, result in a population increase of approximately 703 people, bringing the estimated total population to 17,836. The total number of permits issued by the building department, for all types of activity, is 310 year-to-date. This compares with a total number of permits by the end of March, 1995 of 167 permits. This large increase is in part due to the number of new homes being built but also to residents upgrading their existing homes. This home improvement trend is very positive for the City as it will reduce the development of blighted areas in the City. In addition, it appears that the interest rates for now homes will continue to remain steady resulting in the continued issuance and construction of homes.
