STAY IN YOUR VEHICLE: Walking away from your vehicle during a storm
can be very dangerous. You could lose your way or become exhausted and even collapse.
Your vehicle is the best shelter.

2. KEEP CALM: Remember that the storm will end and you will be found.
Conserving body energy and heat should be your main concerns. Stay calm so that you
can think cle~ly. Do not attempt to push your car or shovel around it during extreme storm
conditions - it is too risky.

3. KEEP FRESH AIR IN YOUR VEHICLE: It is better to be chilly and awake
than to be con~fortably warm and be overcome with carbon monoxide fumes from a
running engine. Keep the vehicle's exhaust pipe free of snow, and run your engine only
for short periOds of time.

4. KEEP WARM WITHOUT USING FUEL: To keep your blood circulating
freely, loosen {ight clothing and change positions frequently. Move your arms and legs
and massage Y~ur f~ngers and toes. Elevate your feet. Tuck your hands under your legs or
your armpits for added warmth. If you are with other people in the vehicle, stay close
together to shale heat.

5/14/96
in: intern/sue/RR snow article 4
