Ben Deemer, repr~esenting the Planning Commission, stated that the Planning Commission's motion included provisions for bus parking and also asphalt shingles which does not seem to be in the agreement anyplace. He felt the bus parking spot could be accommodated on the space where the future road will extend south or a good alternative would be to leave it in the driveway. Dave Brewster, KKE Architects, stated that the way they have designed the site is with a one-way loop system on th~ bank property. Their preference would be not to see busses go to that loop - this access road is ,designed to continue. That's an interim solution and when it comes to the two- way system, the busses will have to park off site. Mayor Hardin inquired about the shingle issue mentioned by Mr. Deemer. Mr. Brewster repli~ that would be more costly but they will take that as a altemate bid. He stated they have designed the bank to be very compatible with the Old School and he felt the shingles were not a real critical element; however, they would be willing to entertain that idea. Councilmember B~.yer inquired of Mr. Brewster how they intend to renovate the inside - as an old town hall or as an old schoolhouse. Mr. Brewster responded that they have not had any discussion with representatives from the City. He anticipated it would be restored as a school building. Councilmember Beyer asked if it would not be a commercial venture as has been reported in the paper. City Administrator Schroeder replied that the commercial venture was an idea of his to recover some of the costs.: It was not perceived by Council as a popular idea. We have talked about renovating the building back to an 1893 building. Councilmember Bcyer stated that she read in the paper that the property the Old School sits on belongs to the bank now. Mr. Schroeder resPonded that the City would retain ownership of that property. Councilmember B~yer suggested that when the schools go on field trips, it's not usually just one classroom ~ it's the entire class and she felt this building was not designed to handle that. Mr. Brewster reported that the building has only one exit so the maximum capacity would be under 50 people - with 30 being a reasonable number. Councilmember B~yer stated that there would be 3 to 400 students that would come at a t/me and she wondered where the other children would go while the 30 are inside the building. She inquired if that safety factor had been given any consideration. Mr. Schroeder stated he did not believe that Mr. Brewster's charge is to evaluate how the City is to use this building. Councilmember Beyer debated that this issue was raised before - the issue of bus parking, etc. Mayor Hardin was certain no one would bring 3 to 400 children to that building at one time.
