PROPOSED CHARTER AMENDMENT TO <br />LENGTHEN THE MAYOR'S TERM <br /> By: Jo Thieling, Recording Secretary <br /> <br />Background: <br /> <br />At the March 26, 11996 Council meeting, a public hearing was conducted regarding the Charter <br />Commission propOsed amendment to lengthen the term of the Mayor from two years to four years <br />commencing witli election year 2000. Following the public hearing, where two opposing <br />comments were n~e by residents, Council directed that this question be placed on the regular <br />ballot in Novembe~r A question arose pertaining to the procedure of placing this on the ballot once <br />it was presented as a proposal from the Charter Commission. Attorney Goodrich has researched <br />this issue as indicated by his attached memorandum.
