~ Case Studies
A. In San Francisco, California, six locations
on three d/ffereht sweets were physically nar-
rowed in conne'~:tion with a street beautifica-
tion program. Street width reduction ranged
from 8 to 18 feet, but st/Il left two lanes of
substantial w/d~th (the narrowest, 11 feet
wide). Before a~d after studies showed that
there was no coi'~sistent or material reduction
in the speed of traffic after street narrowing.
The table below Shows the results of the before
and after speed ~tudies:
B. In Brooklyn park, Mirmesota, four collec-
tor streets in res~ential neighborhoods were
narrowed throug~, the use of pavement mark-
ings. On Francel Avenue, 74th Avenue, and
Xerxes Avenue, t-be 44 foot width of the road-
way was narrov~ed by marking a five-foot
wide bike lane orr both sides of the road. On
Brookdale Drive~ the 44 foot width of the
roadway was n~rowed by marking 8-foot

wide parking lanes on bo.th sides of the street.
Before and after studies indicated 3o change
in the speed of traffic, volume of traffic or
acddent rate on any of these streets due to the
street narrowing. On-street parking was
prohibited along with providing bike lanes,
and these parking regulations have resulted
in several complaints from the neighborhood.
Comments on the parldng lane lines have
been somewhat mixe4 but the majority have
been positive.

William Marconi, 'Speed Control Me.a.ure~ in Resldenfial Areas,
"Traffic En~neerlng, ITE, Mamh 1FTT.
Harry S.
