The purpose of the sign was to
promote ~e existence and location of the bowling alley to the Highway #10 traffic.
Discussiofl~s between City Staff and the City Council regarding whether or not it was
appropriate[ to grant a permit for a sign that would be in violation of City Code centered
a~ound the!following issues:

Can the result improve the aesthetics of the existing condition
Can the result provide for a Highway glO "theme" which could then be
replicated by other businesses.
Can the result provide an improvement in community identity for the City of
Ramsey
Will the result provide for an exposure to the City of Ramsey for future
signage construction for similarly situated businesses

0 bservat[ons:

City Staff p~'ov/ded the applicant and City Council with sign schematics that would promote
the City, Sgperbowl and the businesses in the multi-tenant building on the property where
the sign would be located. The cost estimates for the signs presented exceeded $20,000
and at a Fin~ce Committee meeting on October 22, 1996, it was determined that the cost
was too exqessive for the businesses and the City to absorb. In addition, the City would
have to establish a policy for off-premises signs and be prepared to participate in the cost of
similar proposals from other businesses.

As an asidei City Staff did tour the City for the purpose of preparing an inventory of illegal
non-confor4aing off-premises signs.
