Ground Breaking Memorabilia
BY: James D. Gromberg, Economic Development Coordinator

CASE #2

Background: :
With the recent increase in the development in Business Park 95 and the A.E.C. Energy Park, the
City has conductod a significant number of ground breaking ceremonies in the recent past. It has
been discussed that the City should provide a commemorative item that could be retained by the
company and thaVcould be placed in a display case at the City for future viewing.

This discussion i$ timely as the Planning Commission recently approved over 200,000 square
feet of new comr~ercial space at their August meeting. From the inquires received, it appears
that this trend of Commercial/industrial development should continue into the foreseeable future.
To assist the EDC in the development of a mutually acceptable commemorative item, I have
gotten some catalogs and suggestions from local vendors.

One of the ideas is the Lucite block with a shovel and dirt suspended in the center and the
attachment of a brass plaque indicating the date of the ground breaking and the
opening/dedicatioi~ of the facility. These would cost about $22 a piece and could be purchased in
advance with the plaques attached at a future date.

In addition, I haTM included some pages from the catalogs of other ideas that would be in the
same price range.

Commission Action:

Based upon discussion, the Commission should develop a recommendation for the development
of a standard comtnemorative item for the ground breaking ceremonies.

Reviewed by:
Economic DeveloPment Coordinator
City Administrator
Finance Officer

EDC:08/08/96
