MtSSIS~ <br /> <br />Background: <br /> <br /> CASE #2 <br />;IPPI NATIONAL RIVER AND RECREATION AREA (MNRRA) <br /> By: Mark Boos, Parks/Utilities Supervisor <br /> <br />On November 1~, 1988, Public Law 100-696 established the Mississippi National River and <br />Recreation Area (MNRRA) as a unit of the national park system. The system is composed of <br />about 370 areas ~administered by the National Park Service (NPS), an agency of the U.S. <br />Department of th4 Interior. The Mississippi National River and Recreation Area was established <br />by Congress to (1b protect, preserve, and enhance the significant values of the Mississippi River <br />corridor through fl~e Twin Cities metropolitan area, (2) encourage coordination of federal, state, <br />and local prograrC.~s, and (3) provide a management framework to assist the state of Minnesota <br />and units of loca! government in the development and implementation of integrated resource <br />management prog~rams and to ensure orderly public and private development in the area. <br /> <br />Observations: <br />The varied and ~engthy public planning process have been essentially completed with the <br />adoption of the 1~95 MNRRA Comprehensive Management Plan. The next step probably of the <br />most interest to ~Pu~nsey would be appropriation of funds by Congress to aid in the construction <br />of trails and relqted facilities within the 54,000 acre corridor. To assist communities in <br />implementing thei trail concepts included in the plan. National Park Service staff has been <br />working on mode¢ trail and open space design. Park Service planner and landscape architect <br />Susan Overson will be present to show examples of their progress in this regard and to answer <br />questions. This p~esentation is estimated to last 10 to 20 minutes.
