3, What qualifications do you consider most important for members of your
commission?

P&R:
1. Integrity.
2. Able to communicate their opinions effectively and concisely.
3. How their individual characteristics would contribute to the commission so it reflects
the community in terms of age, gender, type of job, geographic location, area of interest.
4. Particular talent/expertise would be a plus, but shouldn't be required.
5. Experience in municipal affairs should not be required.
6. Interest in and concern for the park system is essential.
7. Length of residence in community should not be an issue.
8. Someone who is able to work well with others on the commission.
9. Interest in or experience in parks or programs. Independent of thought. Vision for a
better city. We don't need people who necessarily think alike or can get along, to form a
positive commission.
10. A genuine interest in the community and the Park & Recreation opportunities. A
broad interest focusing on serving the entire community and not a special interest group.
If specific seats are established, it could become a political game and difficult for the staff
to work with.

Planning:
1. Sense of community, not just self interest. Reside in community at least 5 years.
Someone who is not in the political arena or wants to "get back" at city council.
2. Common sense; ability to keep an open mind and keep personal feelings aside.

EDC:
1. Life experience and an age that corresponds with average age of business owners and
management.
2. A willingness to get involved. The time to dedicate to the meetings, and the ability to
look at issues objectively. I personally prefer people without an ax to grind or personal
issues to promote.
3. Patience, as things move slowly. Also, ability to realize we are a volunteer
commission so some ideas may get nowhere whereas other ideas we may receive
significant heat for.
4. A genuine interest in working for the betterment of the community. Good
communication. A willingness to work with other members of the commission toward a
common goal.
5. Knowledge of City; interested in welfare of everyone in city instead of special interest
or self interest; ability to focus on issues and analyze alternatives; teamwork - ability to
hear other people's ideas.
