CASE #

COUNTY AND LOCAL PRESERVATION PROJECTS
GRANT FOR THE OLD SCHOOL
By: James Gromberg, Economic Development Coordinator
and Ryan Schroeder, City Administrator

Background:

The City bas submitted to the Minnesota State Historical Society a preliminary grant
application for the renovation of District School #28/old town hall. The City has been
notified thtat our pre-application has been approved and that we should proceed with
completingthe final application.

Attached for your review are the following documents:

I)
2)

Pre-application packet
Letter from the Historical Society directing the City to proceed with the
application process

This grant grogram requires a 50 percent match from the City. This match can be in-kind,
(donated materials and labor or cash). The original grant was set at a total of $50,336,
resulting in:a cost to the City of $25,168 in matching funds. As the pre-application
indicates, this grant would be to preserve the existing facility and bring it up to a standard
for final resioration after the final use is determined with the Anoka County Historical
Society an& local residents. These improvements would include making the facility
handicap accessible and constructing a new foundation for the building. The City should
also decide if the building should be moved or retained at its current location.

Staff is currently collecting bids as to the exact cost of completing the work outlined in the
scope of theiwork portion of the application. Since the,i3roject is over $25,000, the City
will be requi~:ed to maintain the property for 20 years after the completion of the grant.

Recommendation:

Staff recommends authorizing the Mayor and City Administrator to sign all documents
relating to the submittal of the want application.

Council Action:

Motion to authorize the Mayor and City Administrator to sign ail documents relating to the
submittal of tile grant application.

Reviewed b3':

Economic Development Coordinator
City Administrator
Cit3, Engineer
Building Officia/

CC: 01/24/95

/jmt
