CASE # '~
?
AUTHORIZE BUDGET AMENDMENT FOR REPLACEMENT OF DROP TANK
ON NEW FIRE'TANKER
By: Jessie Hart, Finance Officer

Background:

When the Fire Department prepared the specifications for the new tanker, eveo, effort was made to
keep the cost at~a minimum. Part of the cost savings effort was a plan to utilize the original 2,200
gallon drop tartk that the Fire Department purchased at its beginning. The truck committee's
specifications ir~cluded a bracket that would hold and carry a 3,000 gallon drop tank that would be
purchased at a litter date, planning to utilize the 2,200 gallon tank until that time. It was anticipated
that the exlsung!2,200 gallon tank would fit in place of the future 3,000 gallon tank.

Unfortunately When the truck arrived earlier this month, it was discovered that the original 2,200
gallon tank is much heavier and makes the folded size larger than the bracket it was intended to fit
into. The origirial tank was a DNR issue tank, rather than a fire service tank. At this point in time
the Fire Depa_rt~. ent has two tankers, of which only one can carry a drop tank.

There is an option to retrofit the new tanker to fit the existing tank, although cost estimates have not
been obtained, ii is anticipated that the cost to this would be as much, if not more than replacing the
existing tank with a 3,000 gallon fire service tank.

A new tank would cost approximately $800.00 and there would be $526.00 available from the
City's Equipm{nt Replacement Fund to offset this cost. The remaining $274.00 would be
reallocated throOgh a budget amendment from line item 43398-2220 (Vehicle Repairs) to a capital
account.

The purchase cfa new rank would best utilize the Fire Depart.ment's equipment and in turn give the
best service to the citizens of Ramsey.

Staff Recommendation:

Committee approval of the purchase one 3,000 gallon f~re service drop tank at price not-to-exceed
$800.00 and amend the 1995 Adopted General Fund budget accordingly.

Committee Action:

Morion to recommend Council approve and adopt Resolution Authorizing Amendment to the 1995
Adopted Generll Fund Budget for the Purchase of One Three Thousand Gallon Fire Service Drop
Tank for the Fire Department.

'Reviewed By:

City Administrator
Finance Officer
Fire Chief

FC: 1/24/95
