In February we received notification that our' application for the
Federal COPSFAST grant was approved for the addition of one new
officer. This program~part of t~e President's Crime Bi!l~ awards
monies to communities that have or are initiating community policing
programs. This is a share grant in which the Federal government
pays ?5%, or a maximum of $75,000, of the officer's salary and bene-
fits over a total three year period.
We have received grant documents requesting budget information
and an outline of the community policing plan in place or to be adop-
te.d upon' the. hiring of the officer. These documents will be completed
and submitted in March for final approval of the actual grant amount.

Weather conditions furing Jandary and February were not a~ all
conducive to operation of the departments snowmobile~ and, largely,
th8 populace didn't ride much either judging from the drop in com-
plaints and observed activity. At the'time this report is being pre-
pared we have been able to get out for about ten to twelve hours.on
the machine, using the special overtime hours provided by Council.
We have made a lot of contacts and issued a few citations.
