Mayor Hardin called the regular meeting of the City Council to order at 7:00 p.m. and led
in'the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

CITIZEN INPUT

Nanette Sorenson, 16868 Sodium Street N.W., Ramsey, stated she is present to speak
abput the nature area behind Ramsey Elementary School. She felt that the nature area is a
unique asset to the school and to the community and could eventually be developed similar
toga smaller Elm Creek Reserve. Ms. Sorenson gave a history of the area and a summary
ofithe trees located there (over 200 species). She informed Council that Ramsey is one of
14 Minnesota schools selected for a School Nature Area Project Grant funding. She
stressed the importance of the plantings to the class rooms and the community as a whole.
Ms. Sorenson commented on the experts who have volunteered their time and the amount
of~community interest (over 75 families have helped). She pointed out how easily the
plantings can be damaged and that significant trees were damaged due to the soil borings
that took place. She disseminated pictures of the damage and explained that once an area is
deStroyed, it's destroyed for a very long time. She asked the City stop alt testing and
reiterated that the nature area is a unique asset to the community and well worth the effort to
preserve it.

C~ty Engineer Jankowski stated he has an exhibit that shows the approximate alignment of
the proposed interceptor sewer. He stated that,, periodically for maintenance, it's important
tO-have access to the sewer at manhole points. He explained that this alignment was given
t~KKE (the school's engineers) last fall so there was knowledge this was the general
lOCation the line was going. This sewer will serve the Fox Knoll subdivision plus the area
t~ the north. He added that this is a significant piece of sewer infrastructure. Mr.
jankowski reported that he met with representatives of the school staff and also parents,
plhs there wilt be another meeting on Monday to see what we can do to decrease the impact
tothe nature area. We may need to request that the manholes be pushed out further but
added that we have a commitment to work with the DNR also.

Ms. Sorenson felt there were other options.

I
I
I
I
I
I
I'
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

City Council/March 28, 1995

I
