CASE #1

1995 RAMSEY BUSINESS APPRECIATION DAY RECAP
By'; James Gromberg, Economic Development Coordinator

Background:

The City conducted the 7th Annual Business Appreciation Day on August 23, 1995, at the Rum
River Hills Golf Course. This year's event had the largest turnout ever, with 104 golfers
participating andlover 110 people attending the dinner. Based upon current projections, the City
should make $10~i on the event if everyone who is invoiced pays. These remaining funds will be
combined with th~ Expo funds and returned to the City Council at the joint meeting tentatively set
for October. As ~hose of you who attended the event know, the Commission donated an oversize
driver as a door p~i. 'ze. The cost of the driver was $70.00 and those members that are intending to
participate in the eost should be prepared to do so at the meeting.

So far, the only complaint/comment received about the event is that we gave away too many door
prizes. All of thee other comments have been favorable, excluding the off-hand comments
concerning the greens. Even the comments about the greens were not about the event, but the fact
that it was too bad that the course had such severe fungus damage. For next year's event, I would
suggest implementing some of the following changes:

1) Issuing nalne tags at the registration table
2) Participant lists from door prizes
3) Better coo~rdination of hole sponsorship
4) Mark the .cards at registration as to team make-up for which category, mixed,
women's, and men's that the team is compliling.
5) High leve! of payout on door prizes. This year, approximately 60 to 65 percent of
players reaeived a door prize. Next year, we may want to try for 75 to 80 percent.

Commission Action:

Based upon discussion, the following changes should be incorporated into the 1996 Business
Appreciation Day.

Reviewed by:

City Administrator
Economic Development Coordinator

EDC:09/07/95
