1994 <br /> ALEXANDRA HOUSE, INC. <br />EMERGENCY SHELTER, SUPPORT AND COMMUNITY SERVICES <br /> <br />Alexandra HoUse, Inc. is a non-profit tax exempt community based <br />organization founded in 1980 by the Anoka County Task Force on <br />Battered Women. The Task Force was formed in 1977 by community <br />people who ~ere concerned about the needs of battered women and <br />their children/youth. <br /> <br />In 1978, the Task Force established a crisis intervention phone <br />line to p~ovide support, information and referral. The <br />overwhelming~need expressed by women who were calling is emergency <br />shelter. <br /> <br />The mission ~of Alexandra House, Inc. is to eliminate domestic <br />violence by~ ensuring accountability from our community while <br />providing sugport services to battered women and their children and <br />youth through safe, temporary emergency shelter; crisis <br />intervention; individual and systems advocacy; support networks; <br />education for battered women and their children and youth; and <br />community edmcation. <br /> <br />The following services are designed to meet these goals: <br /> <br />24 hour.crisis intervention line <br />Systemsladvocacy <br />Support~groups for women, children, youth; <br />EducatiOn and in-services, workshops and training; <br />Hospital advocacy services at Health' One Unity and Mercy; <br />Legal clinic; <br />Voluntegr involvement; <br />Intervention services in the cities of Blaine, Circle <br />Pines/L~xington, Fridley and Anoka; <br />Children/youth advocacy, education and support. <br /> <br />The State of Minnesota recognizes the need for shelters in <br />assisting women and their children/youth escape from a violent <br />situation. Counties are mandated to reimburse shelter facilities <br />for the cost~ of stay for women and their children/youth who are <br />eligible for Aid to Families with Dependent Children (A.F.D.C.). <br /> <br />However, in ~993, 15% of the families at Alexandra House did not <br />qualify because they were employed. Most of the women and their <br />families are the "working poor" and cannot afford the cost of their <br />stay ($72.81 per person per day in 1993). <br /> <br />In 1994, Ale~andra House will: <br /> <br />Provide shelter and support services to 700 women and their <br />children/youth. <br /> <br />Provide community advocacy and education services to 7,200 <br />women and their children/youth. <br /> <br /> <br />
