Memo to City Council
May 2, 1994
Page 2 of 2

While preparing this note to Council, Mr. Deemer called and we reviewed his concerns. Ben
offered to treat Hunters Hill Park, to my understanding,, at his own expense if permitted to b.y the
City and any applicable law. ,Upon inquiry, applicanon of broadleaf control would reqmre a
commercial pesticide applicator s license. Mr. Deemer apparently does not have such a license;
however Maintenance Worker Jim Lacey does. While City Staff has the expertise to perform
broadleaf control at Central Park and the Municipal Center, the City does not have the equipment
nor the time resources to accommodate it.

As was the case last year, we wilt do our very best to maintain the grass height at a reasonable level
in relation to our other tasks. This year we advertised aggressively for part-time help with a wage
range of $5.00 - 6.50 per hour. We were able to hire a competent individual during late March and
early April who was between full-time jobs; he has since left. June 8 is the earliest any of the part-
time persons can begin work with the remote possibility of one who may be able to join us sooner.
As directed by Council, the Park and Recreation Commission will again address the issue of
fertilization and weed control. It is expected, however, that the discussion will focus on direction
for the 1995 budget. Also attached for your information is the City's policy, developed in 1993,
regarding dandelions.

,24
