April 27, 199h

MINNESOT:~ t-]ISTOIil CAL SOCIETY

Mr. Steven J. It has been
reviewed pursuant to the responsibilities given the Minnesota Historical Society by the
Minnesota Historic Sites Act and the Minnesota Field Archaeology Act.

The "no" response to question 26a ma), be premature. There are no reported historical or
archaeological properties in the project's area of potential effect. However, we believe
that there is a good probability that unreported properties may be present. Therefore, ~e
recommend that a sur~ey of the project area be completed. The sur~ey must meet the
requiremenns of the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Identification and
Evaiua~ion, and should include an evaluation of any properties which are identified. For
your information: we have enclosed a list of consultants who have expressed an interest in
undertaking such surveys.

If the project area can be documented as previously disturbed or previously surveyed, we
will re-evaluate the need for su.~-vey. Previously disturbed areas are 5hose where the
nazura!ly occurring post-glacial soils and sediments have been recent!y removed. Any
previous survey work must meet contemporary standards.

Please note that this commenn letter does not address the reauiremenzs of Section 106 of
the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and 36CFR800, procedures of the Advisory
Council on Historic Preservation for =he protection of historic properties. If this
orojec% is considered for federal assistance, it should be submitted to our office with
reference to the assisEing federal agency.

=~ you have any questions on our revie~ of this project, please contact our Revie~ and
Compliance Section at 612-296-5462.

Sincerely,

Dermis A. ~immesna~
Gove-~nment Programs and Compliance Officer

DAO:dmb

Enclosure' List of Consuinants

345 i'[ELLOGG BOULEVARD V~;EST / f, AINT PAUL. *J_INNESOTA 551(12-1900 ;' TELEPHONE:61~--90-6,-~," o ~,~-
