thc g¢otextile mat and donation. The City is currently proceeding on these phases of the
project.

Restoration of the paved areas will occur as time allows but the majority of activity will
be completed during November when equipment traffic on the fresh blacktop will not be
damaging.

Some Landscaping is expected to result as part of the development on the North Fork
Oaks addition. NorthFork lnc. has agreed to mechanically transplant some movable trees
slated for destruction along the open areas of the trail. The City will provide short-term
care during their establishment. Open areas of the trail will also be candidates for inclusion
in the seedling planting program each spring. However, this is only feasible if gopher
control can also be affected.

The last significant development of the Lake Itasca Trail will be the construction of a
Boardwalk to connect thc Hunter's Ridge/Autumn Heights subdivisions to the paved
portion of the trail. The exact route, hence the precise footage, is not known at this time.
Projections suggest 2,500 feet of boardwalk required at about $90,000. This work will
most likely be performed in the winter, because of favorable frozen swamp conditions.
Unless City crews will be performing this work, this project will most likely be bid out
through the public improvement process. During the winter of 1993 - 1994, City Staff
constructed 170' of floating boardwalk between two areas of high ground. This section
utilized cedar poles for floats, stringers and the ties needed for beneath the 2" x 6" green
treated dec-king. The two dozen power poles were donated by Anoka Electric Cooperative
(AEC); the purchase of lumber for this function would have been substantial. AEC also
loaned the City their trailer to haut the poles.

To Summarize, the project is progressing on schedule. As indicated on the attached
budget, funding sources consist of an allocation of $120,000 in 1993 from the Park's
Capital Improvements Program (Landfill Trust) and $40~000 from the Park Trust Fund in
1994, of which $28,197 has been made available. The beginning balance for the Lake
Itasca Trail Project is $148,197. The amount of $43,832 will be needed for paving,
leaving $101,360 for boardwalk, stream crossing and miscellaneous. (Approximately
$3,000 was expended for stump grinding, signage, labor, and the City constructed
boardwalk.)

CC: 09/12/94

/jmt

4
