RECOMME~DkTIONS

I. Cohduct a survey of wooded land in 1979 vs. that in
Th~s should yield a reason why forested land has diminished.
FrOm these results, a plan can be made to prevent future
losses, or provide ~or planting to compensate ~or losses.

!I. In ~an e~fort to keep track of current and long te~m ~orest
trends or problems, a regularly occurring inventory should be
conducted. This will be valuable ~or long teI-m monitoring of
forests in the City of Ramsey. A rotation of ten years could
be ' established, or one portion of the city could be
intensively inventoried each year until the entire city was
completed. Through this =5~e of progra~m, ve~, specific
co~erzype~resource maps could be developed. This type of a
program could also be on a rotation. Inventories conducted
shoiuld be field inventories where data is collected in the
~ie~ld and have established confidence intervals.

iii. If tree planting in residential areas is a goal of the city,
a p~ogr~m ~or planting, maintenance, and monitoring planting
sDa~es must be established. ~ invento~-y of areas ~o be
included in such a program is necessa_~y to establish the
nu~, er of planting spaces; the e~act location of those spaces;
whether or not they are occupied; and the species, size, and
condition of each tree. Through this program, species
diversity could be addressed. There is a variety of software
available to be used in such a program.

iv. Oak~ ~ilt is a problem in Ramsev. =~' is a problem that c~n be
controlled. The city should continue in its e~[orus to become
active in suppressing this disease. Oaks are the most valuable
tre~s in the cf=y, and they need to be protected. This cam
include disease inventories and hazard tree identification, an
active role in vibra=o~-y plowing, and consmruction da~,age
preTention on new deveioDments and homesites.

-- - Kunde Co., ~nc. - Consulting Foresters
