REQUEST FOR AERIAL MAPPING
By: Steven Jankowski, City Engineer

CASE

Background:

In the 1994 Sudget, $30,000 has been allocated for topographic mapping for the City.
This is an e~timate of the amount of money needed to have 2-foot contour intervals
prepared for the rapidly urbanizing southeastern quadrant of the City.

The use of this mapping will be extremely helpful in preparing engineering estimates and
planning for~ the extension of sewer, water, roads, and storm sewer improvements.
However, the!single most immediate use for the mapping will be to provide basic formation
for the development of a Comprehensive Storm Sewer Plan to service this area.

Attached is aproposal from MARKIa'URD, a firm which specializes in this type of work
and whom A0oka County has used on a consistent basis for their aerial photography. The
area proposed for mapping is identified in the proposal. This area coincides with three
major drainage districts identified in the City's Comprehensive Storm Water Drainage Plan
which was prepared in 1980. This is significant in that the adjacent areas will not drain into
the area ident!fied for topographic mapping. A drainage plan can therefore be completed
for this area v~tithout concern for external flows coming into the area.

The proposal!for the work is in the amount of $29,600, which is within the project budget.
It should be rioted that this price includes $1,200 for 1994 aerial photography. You may
recall that thb County was flown for aerial photography the spring of 1993. However,
since the datg of the previous aerial flight, nine new subdivisions have been wholly or
partially developed within the proposed flight area. In view of this significant
development; ! believe it is worth adding four percent of the cost of the project to have the
most current information.

Recommendation:
I would reqqest that the Committee recommend the acceptance of the proposal from
MARKHURD to perform the aerial mapping. It should be noted that authorization to
proceed shot/Id occur as soon as possible so that the aerial flight may take place prior to
substantial leafing out of the vegetation.

Committee ,Action:

Motion to re0pmmend that Council accept the proposal from MARKHLrRD to perform the
aerial mapping.

Reviewed by: Copies also distributed to:

City Engineer Finance Officer
City Administrator

R&B: 04/12/94
