1.0 INTRODUCTION During June of 1994, a cultural resource reconnaissance survey was conducted along the alignment proposed for an extension of Sunwood Drive NW between Krypton Stree5 NW (and west end of built portion of Sunwood Drive) and Count}~ Road 1t6. The invest- igation was performed by Archaeological Research Services (ARS) of Minneapolis for the City of Ramsey, Anoka County, Minnesota. Chris%ina Harrison, Director of ARS, acted as principal investigator, assisted by ARS staff members Jeffrey Bokanson, Ben Mangan and John Strot (Appendix The ob3ectives of the investigation were (1) uo determine the presence or absence of any cultural resources within the proposed project area; (2) ~o evaluate any iden=ified resources in terms of their research significance and possible eligibility for inclusion within the National Register of Historic Places; (3) to determine the specific impac= on any identified cultural resources from the proposed undertaking and make recommendations for the avoidance or other appropriate mitigation of such adverse effect (Appendix B). The investigation was conducted under a Minnesota License to Conduct Archaeological Investigations (Appendix B). The results of the reconnaissance survey proved negative. Field records will be kept on file at ARS and will be made available for viewing/copying upon request. All pertinent observations have, however, been sun%marized within or appended to this report. ..-. 2.0 DESCRIPTION OF SURVEY AREA, ENVIRONMENTAL SETTING AND CULTURAL RESOURCE POTENTIAL. The project area is located in western Anoka County in the northern halves of Sections 26 and 27, Township 32, Range 25 (Figures i and 2). The 80 ft wide alignment would form a westward extension of an existing segment of Sunwood Drive, constructed in 1992, and would run for approximately 1.3 miles west/southwest/west past the southern end of Sunfish Lake/Grass Lake to County Road !16. For the most part, the project will involve new construction; only a short stretch south of the lake will incorporate an existing road. According to the EAW prepared for this project, '~construction will be-completed by scrapers, graders and bulldozers. The we%i'and., crossing will require backhoes to remove organic materials (Which) will be replaced ~i~h granular fill for the roadbed" (City of Ramsey !994). The project will require wetland alteration .permits from the Corps of Engineers and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
