City of Ramsey PHONE (612)427-1410
FAX (612) 427-5543
15153 NOWTHEN BOULEVARD N.W., RAMSEY, MINNESOTA 55303 · TDD (612) 427-8591

I
I
i

December 23, 1993

John Peterson
Good Value Homes

RE: GRADING AND LANDSCAPE PLAN APPROVAL

Dear John,

As you may be aware, City Code requires submittal and approval of a landscape plan for the
subdivision of land. This plan primarily deals with tree preservation and establishment. The tree
make-up and age gradation of the proposed Chestnut Ridge is representative of Ramsey's finest
forest types.

The pr/mary goal of tree preservation is not only protecting the maximum amount of high value
trees, but ensuring that those trees are still living years after the homes are built.

The landscape plan must be approved by staff concurrent with the grading plan,
and prior to disruption of any trees.

I
I

I
I
I

This is done to evaluate the effects of proposed grades on .the trees, which has a bearing on which
trees may be impacted. The City staff is available to assist you with meeting the landscape plan
requirements. Staff feels the most economical way to address the tree concerns is to locate the
approximate location of the front lot corners with lath and indicate any significom; grade changes on
same. This will allow us to hetp you determine the treed areas that are reasonable to protect. The
next step would be to install snow fences around the drip lines of those trees. Staking the lot
corners will also allow us to mark the trees to be salvaged (mechanically transplanted), which in
turn provides a clear picture of what "goes" to the person responsible for the clearing and
grubbing.

I
I
I

Relative to the tree moving, staff will be requiring relocation of select specimen trees in the project
area, most notable, Hackbero,. This indigenous tree is hardy, easily moved, under-represented in
Ramsey, and quite stately when mature. As you may know, in 1994 the City intends to develop a
very significant trail system adjacent and entirely accessible from Chestnut Ridge. This corridor
may be a location for the trees to be moved. Our goal is not to complicate your development
process, but to ensure a high quality subdivision for the benefit of all. Much of Wood Pond Hills
that leads up to Chestnut Ridge was wooded similarly to your property. The few trees that remain
have been filled around and otherwise neglected; some Will die. The City wants to ensure this is
not the case with Chestnut Ridge.

I
