Consider the following rules when devclopiug zoning maps:
Rule 1: A zoning map book should bear the same covet
design, paper type and color as thc zoning code. There should
be an inside cover. Plastic-comb binders are the preferred
binding system.
Rule 2: A zoning map book should have a legend showing
the full name of the zoning and overlay districts and the district
designators used on the zoning maps,
Rule 3: Include a map legend for map books showing the
area covered by each page and the page number.
Rule 4: The vertical axis of maps should be north and south.
Rule 5: The maps should be produced at a scale capable of
showing all property lines. All streets should be identified and
major public facilities shown. Each map page should be
numbered and adjoining maps referenced on each side. Maps
that fit on a standard 11-by-17 paper size are reproducible on
most photocopy machines.
Rule 6: Zoning maps on a single sheet should be folded and
inserted into a pocket located inside the back cover.
Rule 7: Map books should overlap slightly to create
reference points when a user is turning pages.
Rule 8: Include a sidebar on each map where zoning map
amendments are recorded. Include the ordinance number and
the adoption date.
Rule 9: Zoning boundaries should be drawn with a
distinctly wider line than used for property lines. Lines
should avoid covering street names and splitting properties,
and their exact location should be noted where property lines
or natural or manmade boundaries don't exist. Do not use
line or dot screens in lieu of boundary, lines. They clash with
the property, line detail on the base maps, making both very
difficult to read.
Rule JO: Label ever),, zoning district with the zoning and
overlay district designator. To make them stand out, enclose the
designators m a box or circle and erase any map background.
Label all overlapping areas.
Rule 1~: Maintain a single colored zoning map in your
agen%' office which shows the entire jurisdiction. This map,
located near the public counter, will help the public. If
possible, make blue-line "diazo" copies available for sale.
Large maps make it much easier to read and grasp overall
zoning patterns.

The Role of Computers and Computer &ccess
Quick, accurate, and complete access to zoning information is
the mark cfa good zoning code. The public's access to zoning
information is often limited to office hours, leaving much room
for improved public service.
This is changing, albeit slowly, thanks to the information age
and conventional computer technoloD,, innovations are taking
place that promise to make it easier for the public and staffto
access zoning information.
The size and complexity of zoning codes has grown in
response to pressure for zoning to regulate the use of land in
ways largely ignored in the past. Old zoning codes have
struggled to keep pace, but at the expense of brevity and
ease of administration. There is plenty of room for
improvement.

Application Typical Questions Output

Telephone "What is the zoning on Computer-generated
Access my property?" audio response.
Computerized "What are the zoning Menu-driven text
Text regulations for a car search.
wash in the CF~ Zoning
District?"
Customized "Can I pet a copy of all Printed regulations
Zoning zonin9 regulations that unique to each parcel,
Regulations apply to my property?" use, and structure.
Zoning "What are the building Printed calculations
Calculations envelope ro~ulalion$ for showing maximum
a one-acre parcel with a building footprint and
10 percent slope within height, setbacks, and
Watershed Protection maximum nonpermeable
and Hillside Overlay surfaces.
