_Perk Access Road (Pa;kwsv)

The park road will ser~,e as access to the recreation ma and will be similar to residential street
construction w/th "B" style concrete curbing and drainage devices.

The road will also connect the residential areas to the west. The parkway will meander to facilitate
tree preservation, enhance aesthetics and ensure safe vehicular speeds. Near the acuve
destinations, there wil! be pull-off parking on both sides. In several areas, there will be mini putt-
offs to oblige those with decenmalized destinations. (It should be noted that a frequent habil of
industrial employees is to drive their automobile to a park setting to eat lunch, read, or converse in
the relative solitude of their car.) The low volume mad speed of the pa.rkway dictate that there will
not be the need for a paralleling, off-roadway n-ail.

]nlert~retive

Directly nomh of the landfill itself, in the opening in the Norway pines, will be an interpretive
sign/display. This display, located Iiteralty in the shadow of the landfill, will serve as a point of
· -' ~',' education, and mm_inter of our impact upon the e'arr_h..
In,,.r

The display should have both visual and det~ited elements for several age groups. It should speak
to the many ecological econormc and polit/cal issues surrounding the landfill and the park's
histoD'. A simulated cross-sect/on of the landr~Hl and ground water treatment system may be one
element.

Shelters

Park shelters provide relief from weather extremes nero- the recreational users' destination and to
sen, e as gathering points for social interaction.

~oposed for the Surzfish L~e EnvironmtntaI Education R~'rearion Area will be ultimate provision
sn~lt~.s. T'm-ee shelters would be roof supported by comer columns with a hard surface
floor. Tnt fourth shelter wi/] be a malt/pm-pose structure.

a)

The only large shelter proposed, for the park would have two basic elements. One half
would be permanenfly enclosed with lockable doors and windows. The other half will be
p:tma.,tiy an open air design. It would, however, have the capabiiiry of being enclosed by
screen ~.ane!s during insect-laden seasons. Another seasonal adaptation would be
iightwe~gnt windscreen with windows.

Both halves would have individual a~cess to a large stone f'n'eplace and restrooms. The
enclosed portion would also include a kitchenette.

.Tnt above mtn. it/es and its proximiD, to the urban a.ma would make this snmcmrt armactivc
and marker, able for m~nngs and ouasi-vfivate uses.
