Boardmemb~ Pearson inquired if the Chief or the Fire l:;ighters would like to add or delete something ~n~_the process list or if they are in agreement with it. Fire Fighter Sharp suggested that if it's going to be this way, it's important the Department has some inlffUt. If an individual gets in this position and is totally incompetent, someone has to be made aware of this. Mr. Wilson ir~quired if it is written anywhere that the person appointed to Fire Chief has to be a memberiof the Fire Department. He feels it's important that a Fire Chief know his/her resources, thSrefore, an "outsider" would be undesirable as a Chief. Mayor Gilberkson stated that the Fire Department will have as much say in this matter as the City Council} Mr. Schroecter stated that he has gotten a couple of calls from persons on the Fire Department ihdicating that they are happy with this proposed process. Fire Chief Griffin stated that the Fire Department does want to work with the City; however, they do not want to lose too much control. The Department realizes that the City has to be c6ncerned with all aspects of the Fire Chief position and added that this demonstrate~ that the Department would like a working relationship with the City. He stated that th~: Department was first opposed to this procedure but as it was discussed, they found it acce!~table. Ms. McAlone}y suggested that if the entire Fire Department selected its Chief, it may not be based upon qhalifications as much as popularity. She stated that the Department could be involved in the interviewing panel. She suggested a Committee be formed to determine the qualifying qffestions. Chief Griffin 'thought that it may not actually be based on' popularity; however, there is the potential for that. Boardmemb~ Pearson questioned what the term of the Fire Chief is to which Chief Griffin replied there would not be a term. Ms. McAlonCy reiterated there would be no term for the Fire Chief or the Assistant Fire Chief but thefOther officer positions would be considered temporary work assignments. Boardmemb~ Pearson inquired of the Fire Fighters present if they were "okay" with what is being proposed to which they answered in the affirmative. Fire Fighter ~,pence inquired what the recourse would be if it turned out the Fire Chief was not a good ch~oice. Ms. McAlon~y stated that a performance appraisal is done. Fire Fighter Sharp felt that it would be difficult for the City Administrator to do the performance itppraisal for the Fire Chief. Councilmeml~er Beyer stated she is concerned about Mr. Schroeder doing the performance appraisal for the Fire Chief also as, in her opinion, he does not even know what's going on at all in the Fire Department.
