REPORT ON

CASE

DIAGNOSIS OF TI990 COMPUTER PROBLEMS
By: Jessie Hart, Finance Officer

Background:

On March 22, 19~4 the City Council authorized having MASYS Corporation come in and diagnose
the "lock-up" problems being experienced by the Police Department on the TI990 computer
system. It was c}riginally thought the problem was being caused by the 'I'1931 terminals and
keyboards that w~e connected.

On Tuesday, April 5, 1994, a representative from MASYS Corporation performed numerous tests
and diagnostics c~n the '1'1990 computer system. While the tests were somewhat inconclusive
because no failur~t was detected, the tests showed that the hardware (disk drive and controller) and
the central proce, ing unit are in working order and functioning properly. It was found that there
existed a memo~ problem when all terminals, 'i'1931 and PC types, were logged on. The
representative fromm MASYS believes that this memory shortage is the cause of the "lock-up"
situations. Pleaselrefer to the attached letter from John Humphrey of MASYS Corporation.

To prove this th ~e!ory, MASYS has installed a new memory board which virtually doubles the
memory on the s~rstem. This board will be left in place for 60 days to test the theory. After 60
days, if the lock-Up problem has not returned, MASYS will sell us the memory upgrade board for
$500.00.

Since it is curren'~y unknown where the State of Minnesota is going with their systems and the
languages and op Crating systems they will be using, it would be a wise investment to retain the
memory upgrade .~ it indeed solves the problems encountered.

Staff Reeommt halation:

Staff recommend$ that if the memory shortage is the cause of the problems being encountered and
the memory upgqade solves the problem, that authorization be issued to purchase the memory
upgrade board fo~ $500.00 from MASYS Corporation.

Committee Act!on:

Recommend Cou/3Cil approval to purchase upgraded memory board from MASYS Corporation for
$500.00 pending ~e outcome of the 60 day test period.

Reviewed By:

City Administrato~r
Finance Officer
Police Chief

FC: 4/26/94
