CASE #i

PARK PLAN FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD
PARK IN THE SUNNY PONDS SUBDIVISION
By: Parks/Utilities Supervisor Mark Boos

Background:

The attached meinorandum, dated April 22, 1994, was sent to the residents interested in the
development of t~he neighborhood park in the Sunny Ponds subdivision. On Thursday, April 2g,
1994, several re.~[idents "braved" the snow storm and came to City Hall to discuss the park's
development. ThDse residents achieved a consensus for the park's development and also generated
additional requests for information. In addition to the materials presented to them, they requested
cost information pn frisbec golf equipment, volleyball court construction, the cost of a sandbox
and horseshoe pi~s, a potential half-court basketball facility, and tether ball. They also requested
cost break downsffor a backhoe style digger and a full-size independent swing for thc playground.
Thc residents des{red future park dedication projections for the Prairie District in order to help them
formulate the "Phase I" development of the park. Those residents requested this information
preparatory to Tuesday, May 10, 1994, when they will again meet and finalize their requests and
recommendation~ .to the Commission for the park's development. They also plan to have
representatives at!the Ma>, 12, 1994 Park and Recreation meeting.

It is expected that the Park and Recreation Commission will be able to recommend approval of a
park plan and cofi'esponding budget based on information and requests presented by the residents
at the meeting. 'I~he Commission, if possible, should also recommend a name for the park (reports
from the residenf~s April 28, 1994 meeting indicate they support the name "Solstice Park", and
eventual provisioh of a Sun Dial). If all of the park elements are agreed to at them,~,~nn:,,'-" ' o Staff will
formalize the park plan drawing and present the materials to City Council at their Ma>, 24, 1994
m~ring.

Additional information will be available at the m~fing.

Staff Recomm0ndation:

Staff recommend~ the Park and Recreation Comrnission formalize a development plan and budget
for the park and ~rect Staff to proceed with City Council authorization of the parks development
including a park ~ame.

Commission Action:

Based upon discussion.

Reviewed by:

CiD, Administrator
Ci~, Engineer
Finance Officer
Parks/Utilities Supervisor

P&R: 5/12/94

Also" distributed to'

Residents of the Sunny Ponds Subdivision

4:5
