Economic Development Authority (EDA) 4. 1.
Meeting Date: 09/13/2012
Submitted For: Patrick Brama By: Patrick Brama, Administrative Services
Title:
Guest Speaker- -Don Haller, Connexus Energy
Background:
Last year, the City submitted a proposal for a data center solicitation. The site selected was the former City Hall
site on Nowthen Blvd. (CR 5). At that time it was determined that the site satisfactorily met all the preliminary
screening requirements to make a good data center site, such as:
Natural Disasters Resistance - The location should be resistant to the common natural disasters. Avoid floodplains,
avoid areas of high tectonic activity (earthquakes and volcanoes).
Ease of Access - Secure and reliable transportation to the site.
Local Electric and Data Connectivity - The new power supply by Connexus aand the Anoka County Fiber Optic
project make this an ideal site.
Plus, the location offers close proximity to a number of business users and a strong labor pool.
Observations:
One of the hurdles faced witht he previous submittal was the cost to "qualify" the site on a formal basis would cost
the City or the end user potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Connexus has a proposal to assist in thes pre - qualifying costs that they would like to present.
This would have the advantage of making the site "shovel ready" without the cost and time delay to a potential
user. This would greatly improve the probability of construction of a data center on the site.
Funding Source:
N/A
Staff Recommendation:
Based upon discussion, agree to move forward, or modify, the concept as presented by Connexus.
EDA Action:
Kurt?
Form Review
