CASE #

TWIN CITIES BUSINESS MONTHLY PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIY
By: Megan Wald, Associate Planner

Background:

The Twin Cities Business Monthly magazine has approximately 33,000 top executive level
business decision-makers who subscribe to their magazine. The business magazine offers an
opportunity to insert a custom, publication into one of their monthly issues. Staff and the City
Council are interested in working with the Twin Cities Business Monthly magazine to create a
great promotional/marketing piece for the City of Ramsey to be inserted in the August issue.

Observations:

The business magazine personnel will provide editorial, photography/art, design, production,
printing, bindery, and insert 35,000 copies into'the August issue. The' marketing/promotional
piece will consist of 16 pages with full color and will provide for both advertising opportunities
and a professionally written story about Ramsey. The story about Ramsey will highlight what
amenities, commercial development, industrial development,, residential development, Parks, etc.
the City currently offers to residents and businesses. The promotional piece will also include
information about the Town Center, as the Town Center will offer residents and businesses 'a
variety of addition~l opportunities.

The cost associated with producing the publication is $30,000, which includes the services
mentioned above and an additional 5,000 copies of the promotional piece will be provided to the
City of Ramsey to use however the City desires.

The Way several Cities have handled paying-for the $30,000 fee is to ask local businesses and
developers to sponsor Ramsey's promotional piece. Staff will be working on drafting a letter to
local businesses and developers requesting their support and money contribution the week of
March 10, 2003. Staff has not finalized the number of desired sponsors or formulated a list of
businesses and developer's to approach to be a sponsor. Staff will be working with the Twin
Cities Business Monthly staff to. determine what 'strategy and .approach typically works the best
to ensure a good balance of sponsors is reflected in the promotional piece.

Staff had a conversation with John Feges, of Town Center LLC, regarding the promotional piece
and he has committed to be a sponsor and is excited to assist City staff in securing other Town
Center developers or businesses to be a sponsor.

Enclosed is a copy of the business proposal submitted by the. Twin Cities Business Monthly
magazine. The proposal outlines a timeline of when Sponsors need to be secured, editorial outline
approved, final page revisions' and proofing completed,i and when the promotional piece needs to
be sent to the printer.

Recommendation:

The management team has had a preliminary meeting regarding what story or concept the City of
Ramsey should tell in the promotional piece. A few ideas were "Positioned to achieve a Perfect
Balance, .... Ramsey Developing Smart," and "Rural and Urban Opportunities." There are very
preliminary concept and theme ideas. A professional writer from the business magazine will
meet with staff to refine and accentuate the City of Ramsey's story.
