Kenko Company Relocation
By: James E. Norman, City Administrator

Background:

The City relocated Kenko Company to a City owned property located in Gateway North
Industrial Park No. 5 (located west of Sauter and Sons property) as part of the
redevelopment project when 141 st Street was constructed.

The City has learned that Sauter and Sons is interested in exercising their option to
develop the property that Kenko currently stores its equipment. Therefore Kenko
Company will need to relocate to a new site. Kenko currently owns property next to
Adolfson and Peterson located off of Armstrong Blvd. Staff is under the opinion that
Kenko Company would be better located west of the current Public Works Facility on
land the City is in the process of acquiring. The City would like Kenko to construct a
facility within a year or two. This does not meet Kenko's construction plan, they do not
wish to construct a permanent facility for at least another 3 to 5 years.

Observations:

Staff believes that a move by Kenko to the property they own west of Armstrong Blvd
would be problematic to the future plans of a town center and other transit oriented
development around the town center. Kenko has recently made an application for an
interim use permit to allow outside storage of construction materials and place a
temporary modular structure on the property they own west of Armstrong Blvd. The
Planning Commission would accept a recommendation by the EDA concerning the
interim use permit.

EDA Action:

Based on discussion.

Review Checklist:

Community Development Assistant

EDA: 10.8.01
