COMMISSION BUSINESS <br />5.01: Presentation by Girl Scout Troop #11375 <br />Chairperson Shryock invited the Girl Scouts to come forward and introduce themselves. <br />Michelle Schmid of 17150 Potassium Street NW of Ramsey introduced her daughter, Hannah <br />Schmidt and Rachel Emmons of Anoka who are Girl Scouts. She explained that she is the <br />Centennial Day of Service Coordinator for the Girl Scout Northern Stars service unit for Anoka <br />and Ramsey. She explained that Girl Scouting is celebrating their 100 -year anniversary this year. <br />She reviewed that in honor of this, they had a number of special events such as selling cookies at <br />the State Fair, a day of Scouting at the Mall of America and their Centennial Day of Service <br />Project on October 13. She explained that for their Centennial Day of Service Project they did <br />activities in Anoka and Ramsey as their members are from both. She explained that they had <br />three projects, which were a cleanup project to improve water quality, storm drain marking and <br />flyer handouts to educate about the impact of dumping in sewers and door flyers which provided <br />education about water quality. She commented on October 13 they had 186 volunteers at Aitkin <br />Park, which is by the Rum River. They cleaned up leaves and sticks. They had a goal of <br />cleaning 900 bags of leaves and debris. Ms. Schmid explained that 186 volunteers accomplished <br />801 bags in three hours. She explained that this included girls from kindergarten age to 16 years <br />of age along with family and friends. <br />Hannah Schmid explained that she is in Troop 11375 and has been a Scout for eight years. She <br />reported that she likes Scouting because it promotes leadership. She explained that she learns a <br />variety of things including about storm drains. She stated that for the 100 -year anniversary she <br />was in charge of the drain markings project. She reviewed that they provided information about <br />the danger of dumping fertilizers and chemicals into drains. She added that they marked 45 <br />storm drains and hung up 475 door hangers around The Draw. <br />Ms. Schmid thanked staff for assisting in their planning. She stated that their goal was to hand <br />out 306 flyers, which they exceeded.
