COMMUNITY BENEFITS The Environmental Protection Agency reports in 2010, that Americans generated about 250 million tons of trash. The country recycled / composted over 85 million tons of this material, which is equivalent to a 34.1 percent recycling rate.* With these types of numbers filling our landfills, it is important our country focus on ways to reduce waste and increase recycling. The environmental footprint specific to clothing and textiles is substantial. Americans throw away a whopping 68 pounds of clothes on average each year, and we only buy 10 pounds of recycled clothes annually.** The good news is that reclaiming clothing and textiles for reuse and recycling saves a staggering amount of energy and natural resources. Some studies of this recycling process show remanufacturing or reusing textiles saving up to 85 percent of the energy required to produce the same product from virgin materials.
