Case #3: UPDATE ON FIRE CALLS

There have been 15 fn-e calls since January 1, 1990. The average duration is approximately
two hours. The average number of fire fighters answering the call is 12. There were 17
fire fighters to help with the fn'e on Potassium Street N.W. and 19 fire fighters answering
the call on Saturday, April 14th. The average responding time is four minutes. Tile first
three people present roll the grass rig and the next one tends the station. Then 701 is sent
out and now the tanker is always sent out right away as opposed to before when the tanker
was held back to see if it was needed. Chairman Pearson inquired about the status on the
pumper truck. Mr. Hoeke informed him that it was supposed to be ready by the 15th of
June. Mr. Hoeke also stated that due to the poor engineering by Fire Safety from Duluth,
the grass rig was taken to General Safety in North Branch and it was fixed for free. Mr.
Wilson concluded that this proved the cheapest bid is not always the best bid. Chairman
Pearson requested the frre department appoint a spokesperson to come once a month to the
City Council meeting and give a short update on the happenings in the department. This
would give them more exposure. Mr. Cich stated the City Council gets an update from the
Police Department ever), month and that he feels the happenings of the fire department
should be part of the public information also. He felt it would be a good idea even if it was
to just give the statistics such as 15 fire calls, four minutes roll-out time, 12 men
answering, etc.

Mr. Hoeke and the fire fighters present felt this was a good idea and that they would take
care of sharing the information with the City Council and the public.

Motion by Mr. Bawden and seconded by Mr. Wilson to adjourn the meeting of the Fire
Board.

Yurther Discussion: There were a few fire fighters present and they stated they were
there to inform the Fire Board that they needed help to get maintenance for the truck. Mr.
Cich asked if they could get help from the Public Works Department. Mr. Hoeke reported
that the fzre track needed rear-end work and that it had been taken up with Merle Mevissen,
Public Works Supervisor and that it would be fixed. The speedometer is also not in
working condition and that too would be fixed. Mr. Cich stated that the City Public Works
Department should take the fire department vehicle and give it a technical inspection and see
that the safety lights are fixed along with anything else that is not working properly. Mr.
Hoeke stated that would be taken care of.

Motion carried. Voting yes: Board Members Bawden, Wilson, Cich, LaTour and Wilson.
Voting No: None. Absent. Board Member Spence and City. Administrator David Hartley.

Mee[ing adjourned.at 7:29 p.m,

Fire Board/April 9, 1990
