PAPER <br />RECYCLING <br /> <br />INTRODUCTION <br />CcUrrently, in the United States approximately 22 million tons of waste paper are <br />ollected for recycling. Of the 22 million tons collected, about 15 million are post <br />onsumer wastes and 7 million are industrial wastes in the form of clippings gen- <br />erated in plants making paper products. Over 28% of all the paper used in this country <br />is now being collected and utilized as either raw material to make recycled paper and <br />paperboard in the U.S. or as an export to countries overseas. <br /> , <br />In' 197g, approxima,tely, lg million tons of waste paper were collected for recycling. <br />increasing demand. Of the 22 million tons recycled annually, the paper industry use~ <br />approximately 18 million tons. Three hundred thousand tons are used to make other <br />products such as insulation and building products and the remaining 3.7 million tons <br />are exported to recycling mills overseas. Keep in mind that eollection is only the first step in recycling. Recycling takes <br />place when waste paper is used as a raw material to make a new product and during <br />that process the waste paper loses its identity. <br /> <br />How To Locate Markets <br />There are approximately 2,000 waste paper dealers in the U.S. who buy paper from <br />colleetors.'Waste paper dealers are listed in the yellow pages of the telephone directory <br />under "waste paper" or "recycling." Before starting any recycling program for waste <br />paper, contact the dealers in your area and visit with them personally if possible. Dur- <br />ing this visit, you will learn what grades of recyelable paper they are buying, the prices <br />that they are paying, the quality they require, and how the reeyelable paper will be <br />transported from its point of generation to the dealer who will buy the paper. Also, <br />there are many recycling paper mills that buy reeyclable paper at the mill. Most of <br />these mills are also identified in the yellow pages. <br /> <br />Most mills that buy recyclable paper at the mil1 site require it to be delivered to them <br />in a form that can be handled easily. Usually it is delivered in pick-up trucks or vans <br />and the driver must unload it onto a conveyor belt where it can be automatically <br />handled in the manufacturing process. <br /> <br /> <br />
