MEMORAI~DUM

TO:

FROM:

DATE:

SUBJECT:

Ramsey Planning and Zoning Commission

Glyn Huff, Building Official

April 14, 1989

Frost Footings and Pole Buildings

The Building Codes do not discriminate between perimeter frost footings and
poles placed in the ground to the required frost depth (42" in this area). It is
rather like comparing apples to oranges. Poles used in pole buildings are
monolithic in nature. By this, I mean they act as foundation, sidewall support,
and roof support. Pole type buildings, when properly constructed, meet the intent
of the code. If these buildings did not meet minimum requirements of the
building codes, they would not be allowed by the codes.

The fact that pole buildings are less costly to construct is an incentive for
perspective owners to use this t)-pe of construction.

GHH:ccr
