COMMISSION BUSINESS <br /> <br />Case ,¢1 Discussion gf R~m~y Tr¢il Sy$lem. <br /> <br />Park and Recreation Commissioner Roy Shumway read through the background information <br />regarding the proposed trail system in Ramsey. <br /> <br />l~'lr. Merl.-'-qd Otto explained Ihal the Ramsey trailmap was put together as a general floor plan <br />indicating where the Parks Commission would like lhe frails to be placed. He also said that lhe <br />Commission was looking for buildable land so the trails were nol just lowland and marshes. He <br />also showed the Cily Council and the Park Commission the areas where tand has already been <br />acquired for the trail system. <br /> <br />Councilmember Pearson slated that in his opinion the subjecl of a trail syslem should be <br />brought betore the cilizens Io get their inpui. They should also be lotd lhal they will be lhe ones <br />who will have lo pay for the inslallalion and the mainlenance of a lrail syslem. <br /> <br />Mr, Mertand Olio explained thai most of the trails in Ramsey were going to connecl inlo the <br />regional trail system. He also slated thal the only way to get Stale Aid for a snowmobile lrail <br />syslem was Io connect wi~h the trail syslem that Andover, Elk River, and Zimmerman are <br />connected 1o, <br /> <br />Councilmember Cich asked how much it would cosl to build and maintain the trail system. <br /> <br />Mr, Merland Otto told Councilmember Cich that is would cost roughly about a million dollars to <br />build the trail and that he did not have figures on how much it would cost lo maintain it. <br /> <br />Commissioner Shumway told the Council that he could gel some figures showing the cost of <br />installation and maintenance along with the cost of having the trail policed. <br /> <br />Commissioner Roselle suggested that the City try to connect the parks that are already existing <br />with the trail system. <br /> <br />Mayor Gary Reimann said that he also feels the Cily should find out what 1he citizens have 'to say <br />about a trail system and the cost; he also said it should be a decision made by the citizens and <br />possibly there should be a vote and/or a bond issue to get the input needed. <br /> <br />Commissioner Roselle suggested that the City Council also keep in mind what a trait system will <br />mean to the children of the Cily. <br /> <br />Councilmember DeLuca said that .the concept of a trail system is a good one.
