Maple Grove indicated that the costs were equal
($3,000/Mile) for each type but they did not take into account an
overlay. Brooklyn Park did take overlays into account and
concluded that bituminous streets were a little higher to
maintain over a long period of time. However~ Brooklyn Park
stated the level of service for gravel streets is much lower than
bituminous streets. They also stated that once the traffic
exceeded 100 trips per day, the number of complaints on gravel
roads increased dramatically.

Based on discussions with engineers and public works directors
from other cities, we concluded that the method of comparison of
maintenance costs used by Brooklyn Park was the fairest and most
equitable. Using that method, we estimated the maintenance cost
per mile of a 24 foot wide bituminous and gravel street in
Ramsey.

Annual Maintenance Costs/Mile

I. Gravel Street:

Grading
Adding gravel (replace every 10 yrs)

1,683.00
1,328.00

Total $3,011.00

II.
