Minnesota
Department of Transportation
District 5
2055 No. Lilac Drive
Golden Valley, Minnesota 55422

May 24, 1989

(612) 593- 8103

Honorable Gary R. Reimann
Mayor of Ramsey
15153 Nowthen Boulevard N.W.
Ramsey, MN 55303

Re:

C.S. 0202 (T.H. 10)
Turn Lane at Sunfish Lake Boulevard
(County Road 57)

Dear Mayor Reimann:

Thank you for your letter of May 12 regarding the right turn
lane on T.H. 10 at Sunfish Lake Boulevard. We have been
aware for some time that the access to the "Plants and
Things" store presents a less than desirable situation.
Before receiving a letter from the school bus company
earlier this month, we have only had one or two inquiries
about the access in the last several years. In spite of its
configuration, however, we have record of only one other
accident in the last eleven years that may possibly have
been related to the presence of the driveway on the right
turn lane.

Because Mn/DOT's resources are limited, it is necessary to
prioritize proposed improvements to assure that the benefits
from public expenditures are maximized and the greatest
potential for accident reduction is addressed. While we
certainly regret that any accidents occur on the trunk
highway system, we find that many of the safety improvement
projects that we are able to fund are those that are likely
to reduce as many as ten or more accidents per year.

It appears that the only feasible improvement that would
adequately address the problem covered in your letter would
be the closing of the driveway on T.Ho 10. (Another
entrance on T.H. 10 could not be located far enough to the
east to make a significant improvement in the situation.

An Equal Opportunity Employer
