CC Work Session Meeting Date: 08/27/2013 By: Jo Thieling, Administrative Services Title: Discuss Committee Appointments Background: As Council is aware, the Council seat for Ward 1 was vacated by the resignation of David Elvig. Mr. Elvig's resignation also left vacancies on the Finance and Public Works Committees. Mayor Strommen, who serves as the alternate to these Committees, was appointed to the Finance Committee, and Councilmember Riley was appointed to serve Mr. Elvig's term on the Public Works Committee. As Council is also aware, Jill Johns was elected to serve out the remainder of David Elvig's term as Councilmember for Ward 1. Past practice has been for the Mayor to fill the alternate role for the committees, therefore, it would be consistent with past policy to appoint Councilmember Johns to serve on the Finance Committee to fullfill the balance of the Elvig appointment. Therefore, Mayor Strommen would again be appointed as an alternate on the Committee. Observations /Alternatives: A resolution has been placed on the Consent Agenda for tonight's meeting, formally appointing Councilmember Johns to serve on the Finance Committee, and Mayor Strommen as alternate, for the remainder of the year. If the Council comes up with a different alternative, that resolution may be pulled at the time of Consent approval. The Council has the option of leaving the appointments as is, or appointing any other member. In any event, an alternate would need to be appointed to serve on the Finance Committee.
