CASE

By:

SAFETY STATUS REPORT
OF STATE HIGHWAY #47
Dave Hartley, City Administrator

Background:

The City Council and several residents and business persons have expressed a concern about the
safety of State Highway #47, particularly at key intersections such as County Road #116 and
153rd Avenue N.W.

Enclosed is a copy of a speed zoning study recently released by the Minnesota Department of
Transportation which evaluates speeds traveled by motorists from 485 feet south of McKinley
Street to 150 feet south of 167th Avenue N.W. The conclusion of that traffic study is stated in a
letter from Mr. Joel Katz, P.E., District Traffic Engineer. Mr. Katz' recommendation is to extend
the 45 m.p.h, speed zone northward to County State Aid Highway #5 (Nowthen Blvd. N.W.).

Staff has also requested of the Minnesota Department of Transportation permission to stripe for a
crosswalk and properly sign State Highway #47 at 142nd Avenue N.W. We are hopeful that
Mn/DOTs response will be available for the City Council meeting.

Enclosed are letters to Representative Teresa Lynch, Senator Greg Dahl, and District Traffic
Engineer William Crawford and a proposed resolution for your consideration.

Recommendation:

Council action will be to receive the report and consider the proposed resolution>.

Review Checklist:

City Administrator X
City Attorney
City Engineer
Commurdty Development Director X

Chief of Police
Finance Officer
Public Works Supervisor
Other

X
