CASE #16

PURCHASE OF POLICE VEHICLES
By: Michael Auspos, Chief of Police

Background:

The 1990 budget was approved to include the purchase of two police vehicles to replace the old,
high mileage vehicles now in service. During 1989, the City of Ramsey participated in the
Hennepin Count), Joint Purchasing Pro,am for police vehicles and the results of the bid process
became known to me on November 24, 1989. Thc price for a new police model of Ford Crown
Victoria (base price) is $12,892.00 and the supplier is Farmingmn Ford/Mercury. The cut-off date
for ordering the cars is December 15, 1989 with projected arrival date of April 14, 1990.

Observations:

This 3'car, the only add-on to the base price for a new vehicle will be the cost for the special paint
to match the other in-service vehicles. That amounts to $187.00 per car. With the add-on, the total
price per car is $13,079.00. The price for the two new cars in 1989 was $13,471.00 each with
add-ons and deductions which reflect a price decrease for this year of $392.00 per vehicle. This
puts the total cost for the two units at $1,842.00 below the budgeted amount for 1990.

Council Action:

Motion to authorize purchase of two Ford Crown Victoria police vehicles from Farmington
Ford/Mercury at a unit price of $13,079.00 for a total of $26,158.00.

Review Checklist:

City Administrator
City Attorney
City Engineer
Community Development Director
Public Works Supervisor

X Chief of Police X
Finance Officer X
Planning & Zoning Commission
Park & Recreation Commission
